Creatively inspirational movies

While researching and writing this, I realized how few stylized comedies there are. I think many of them rely on comedic talent of the their stars to sell the movie without considering the look of the movie. But I did manage to find 4 beautifully shot comedies that are an exception.

Science of Sleep

This movie gets my creative juices flowing and makes me want to make crafts and work on art projects all day long. Michel Gondry use of simple paper and fabrics crafts to animate dreamlike vignettes that express the imaginative world of the main character, makes me feel like I could create something that spectacular too.

Grand Budapest Hotel

All of Wes Anderson’s movies are beautifully art directed. From the movement of the camera, to the vintage inspired costuming and the elaborately decorated set. Every bit of his movies seem carefully thought out and is executed exquisitely. But, of all Anderson’s movies, Grand Budapest Hotel takes the cake. The epitome of Anderson style. Bright vivid color schemes within each scene

Amelie

This is another film that blurs the lines between fantasy and reality. Amelie has all the charm of vintage france Makes me nostalgic for a time and a place that I’ve never been. The warm glow that saturates each scene gives this movie a homey and intimate feel.

Hairspray

An homage to the music fashion and dance of the sixties, the era of Waters’s youth. This always the film I think of when I think of John Waters style. The costumes and sets are distinctly 60s but they also seem to have an 80s twist. The kitschy, satirical, tone of the film, walks the line between family fun and something both lewd and subversive (especially at the time.)
