Creatively inspirational movies

I’m not a huge fan of the drama genre but when I started to make this list I realized just how many stylized and beautiful drama movie there are out there that I had to include.

Jane Eyre

This film is both modern yet faithful to the time of original book by charlotte bronte. Most of the movie looks as though it’s been shot through filters of muted tones of grey and blues, which contribute to its more contemporary feel. It’s also reflective of the sullen world of hardship and gloom of our heroine. The dreariness broken up by more uplifting scene bathed in bright orange-gold hue cast by fire light.

White Ribbon

This film centers on seemingly picturesque little village that hides its sins. But they started to emerge through its younger generation. Beautiful black and white film with crisp contrast. I must also mention the originality of this interesting and dark story.

Marie Antoinette

Costume and set design once again contribute to my love for this movie. Sofia Coppola used bright pastels even though many painters of the rococo era used a balance of yellow red and blue. I think the choice of bright hues and modern music adds a nice juxtaposition to a classical era and emphasizes Coppola’s effort to relate marie and her royal court to a the party girls of today.

Lost in Translation

This movie really makes me want to travel to Japan. Although, whenever I watch this film, the sweeping views of the tokyo lit up a night, make me feel like I’m there. Sofia Coppola ability to capture beautiful snapshots japanese life that feel both intimate and distant at the same time.

The Queen

I’m always fascinated to look into the life of the royal family. This film picks up after the tragedy of princess Diana’s death. Beautiful cinematographer melds a sense of realism while adding a slight sense surrealism to a very rigid life of royalty, dictated by strict decorum.
