Creatively inspirational movies

Interstellar

It thrills me to no end when movies are deeply rooted in fact and not just made up to fit the whim of its creator. This movie makes it on the list for its pure innovation of using actual scientific information to inform every aspect of this movie. Most notably, the gorgeous center piece of this movie, the black hole, bending light, time, and the lives of the main characters. Leading them on a heartbreaking but courageous journey to save the planet.

Inception

Yet another Christopher Nolan film. I love that he uses in camera special effects, many of which have kept me guessing as to how they were done. In a time when directors rely too heavily on CGI, Nolan is one of the few directors keeping the old ways alive. Again featuring a some beautiful cinematography of Wally Pfister.

Beyond the Black Rainbow

I stumble across the trailer for this 2001: a space odyssey throw back kind of randomly , on the internet (as one does). And even after watching the trailer I wasn’t entirely sure what the movie was about but, I knew I had to see it. It’s very confusing but visually gripping movie. There isn’t is a whole lot of exposition about how the characters got where they are, instead we are left to infer much of the information ourselves.

The Cell

While I do have a few issues with the plot holes and miss casting of this film, it’s still one of the most visually stunning movies on the list. The costume and set design come together creating a disturbing yet stunning work of art.

Melancholia

I have to admit, this isn’t my favorite movie. It’s dark and nihilistic tone is really depressing. That being said it’s still a beautiful movie. The first 10 minutes of the film are unsettling vignettes foreshadowing of events in the film. Despite it’s dark tone the film is crisp and clear. Many scenes are washed in warm peachy pink and cream hues that give way to shades of blues and greens throughout the film.
