Working on a computer all day doesn’t typically let you get out into the world that often. Graphic designers tend to be more pale than the general population. So when I do get out into nature, it’s a great treat. Being in nature helps break up the monotony of my day and can also put me in a better mood. But I also find the organic forms I see there inspire me in the office as well. These pictures are from the conservatory of flowers, one of my favorite places in San Francisco. (full disclosure: I have hundreds of favorite place in San Francisco). While not a completely natural habitat, this place allows visitors to experiences the environments from around the world that we would not get to enjoy otherwise. I often return to these images I took on a pilgrimage to the Conservatory, using them as inspiration for layout, composition, and form.

Organic Shape and Fluidity

Where does one part end and the other emerge? Form follows function is an ideology I constantly use in my work and natural selection is the fountainhead of this concept.

Patterns

This naturally occurring phenomenon blurs the lines between what randomly grows in nature and those consciously created by man. Weather I believe that one has influence over the other it’s hard to say.

Layouts and Grouping

I constantly strive to create complementary compositions within my work that doesn’t look forced. Try as I might I’m not sure I’ll ever be as good as mother nature.

If you’re ever in san Francisco I highly recommend taking the trip to the Conservatory of Flower in Golden Gate Park. See more of my images here.
